ESHKOL. Levi (1895-1969). Third prime Minister of Israel. Underrated during his lifetime. During the War of Independence he was the Deputy Defense Minister under David Ben-Gurion. Treasurer for the Haganah, he served as Minister of Finance from 1952-63. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1963. He was successful in getting President Lyndon Johnson to maintain a balance of arms in the middle East. Early Israeli cover with two Israeli stamps affixed and cancelled Tel-Aviv, 1/9/1954.
