Eisenhower, Dwight D. (1890-1969). 34th President of the United States. During WWII he was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Europe. Attained 5 Star Rank as General of the Army. In June of 1952 Eisenhower retired from the Army and began to actively campaign for the Presidency. Typed letter signed on the Imprinted stationery of “Office Of Dwight D. Eisenhower.” Brown Palace Hotel, Denver, Co 8/11/1952. To the actor Basil Rathbone. In part: “Indeed you are well known to me as “Sherlock Holmes” and I have been familiar with several of your many other capacities. Many thanks for your thoughtfulness in sending me a subscription to “Intelligence Digest”...there seems to be a great deal of substance to it...Your good concern in this matter particularly impresses me, coming at a time when so much depends upon thinking, praying Americans. Hand signed in full by Eisenhower particularly at a time when he was prolifically using the autopen machine. In fine condition together with the original envelope bearing a U.S. paper metered 6 cent stamp, cancelled Denver, Colo Aug.11.52. Interesting, while on the road campaigning for the presidency that Eisenhower found the time in his hotel room to personally answer a celebrity’s letter.
