The Father of the Canadian Crown

Son of George III

Father of Queen Victoria

EDWARD, Prince  Duke of Kent and Strathearn  (1767-1820).  Fourth son of King George III and Queen Charlotte, Father of Queen Victoria. Prince Edward was created Duke of Kent and Strathearn and Earl of Dublin on 23 April 1799. He was appointed a General and commander-in-chief of British forces in the maritime province of North America. In 1802 he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar.  Edward lived in Canada and Nova Scotia from 1791-1800. He is credited with the first use of the term “Canadian.”  He is known as the “Father of the Canadian Crown.”  Edward was the first British Prince to enter the United States since the recognition of America’s full Independence in 1783.  He travelled to Boston on foot from lower Canada in 1794.  He died six days before his father George III and less than a year after his   daughter’s (Victoria) birth. Edward is interred in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.  Victoria succeeded to the throne in 1837 and reigned until 1901. Edward is the namesake of Prince Edward Island.

Letter signed,  a lengthy four and a half pages, signed  “Edward.”  Kensington Palace, 12 November 1813. He writes: “My Dear Conran, I do myself the pleasure of acknowledging your letter of the 10th and thank you much for your offer of the Iron Grey Horse which I should have no hesitation in immediately accepting, were not my ideas of a fine horse somewhat at variance with general opinion; I therefore request the favour of you to give me the previous information whether the horse in question has a fine Crest,  a Broad Bosom, short Back, short limbs & a round Barrel, as these are all fine of Beauty with me.  If you are enabled to answer these queries in the affirmative, I will gladly take him in exchange for the one I offered you giving you the proposed difference.  I should however mention that my Horse is now turned out to Hampton Court Park for the Winter, where it could remain should you like it – I am well aware you have no Sinecure in your present command, but as it is one generally given to those who stand first for  Active Service I trust your wishes on that head will soon be accomplished, I shall not now discuss the subject of employing the Milita in the  Peninsula as you will no doubt learn from the Papers the views & sentiments of Government upon that head. I am glad however to hear you speak in such fair terms of the men - Adverting to what you say of offering the Grey to the Prince Regent I think it right to observe that nothing goes down in that quarter unless Col. Bloomfield recommends & besides him there are so many options to satisfy that I should hardly think the expedient would answer.

I am desired by Madame de St. Laurent to offer her best remembrances & many thanks for the Pagodas, and I remain with friendly regard Yours faithfully Edward.  The first four full pages are in very good condition. Page five shows some small holes in the folds not touching any writing or signature. The last page has his address panel free franked “Kent & Strathearn.” around the corners of the franking panel shows some wear at the corners where it was once folded. All writing nice and dark. Together with a nice color portrait of Edward 8.5”x11.”.............
