DOULTON, Sir Henry (1820-18970. Inventor and manufacture of pottery, instrumental in developing the firm later to be known as Royal Doulton. In 1835 he joined his father in the pottery business, one of his experiments was the production of a good enamel glaze. In 1867 he presented his first examples of his art pottery at the Paris Exhibition. Charles Dickens worked in Doulton’s warehouse and pasted thousands of labels on Doulton pottery bottles. Rare and lengthy autograph letter signed, four full pages, 8”x5”, Woodlands. During the 1870’s he turned his focus to decorative arts. In 1877 he executed a takeover of a factory and began producing fine porcelain. Doulton’s fine china became a favorite of the English Royal family. Henry was knighted by Queen Victoria. He was he first potter in history to be awarded knighthood. In 1899 Doulton and Company became a public company. Rare autograph letter signed, four full pages, 8’x5”, Woodlands, Tooting Common, 16 February 1875, on black bordered stationery. He writes to “My dear Sparkles.” Obviously, Sparkles was a very close friend of the family and close to Henry. Henry writes about the death of Sparkles mother, and in much detail about the history about their relationships in the past. A heart wrenching letter that had to be very difficult for Henry Doulton to write. In fine condition..................$385.00
