DOUGLAS, Donald W. (1892-1981). American aircraft designer and manufacturer. Established Douglas Aircraft in 1920 and remained as President until 1957. He was Board Chairman until 1967. His company developed two twin-engine planes; all metal DC-1 in 1933 and the famous DC-3 (1936), which by 1938 was transporting 95% of the nations civilian air passengers. His planes dominated the commercial airline industry. Douglas Aircraft merged with McDonnell Aircraft in 1967. Official photograph with the Douglas Aircraft stamp on verso.
