Mother of the Everglades
DOUGLAS, Marjory Stoneman (1890-1998). American journalist, writer, and environmentalist. She was known for her staunch defense of the Florida Everglades. Born in Minneapolis she moved to Miami to work for the Miami Herald. She became a freelance writer producing over 100 short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was “The Everglades: River of Grass” (1947) which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Douglas was also involved in many issues that included women’s suffrage and civil rights. She won numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was inducted into several Halls of Fame. The Everglades: River of Grass. Rinehart & Co. 1947, four hundred and six pages with illustrations by Robert Fink. Hand signed with an “in person” signature by Douglas on the title page. Douglas was bedridden for some time in her Coconut Grove home in Florida. The book was left with her caretaker for two weeks until the call came in to pick up the book as it was finally signed. In G to V/G condition with very light wear along the edges of the covers.
