Mother of the Everglades
DOUGLAS, Marjory Stoneman (1890-1998). American journalist, writer, and environmentalist. She was known for her staunch defense of the Florida Everglades. Born in Minneapolis she moved to Miami to work for the Miami Herald. She became a freelance writer producing over 100 short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was “The Everglades: River of Grass” (1947) which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Douglas was also involved in many issues that included women’s suffrage and civil rights. She won numerous awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was inducted into several Halls of Fame. Very scarce autograph letter signed, 2 pages on her Florida letterhead. 17 November 1955. She sends her autograph on a card (not enclosed and another on this letter). She regrets she has no photographs and tells the person writing where he can get one. She writes about her greatest satisfaction being awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters in 1952 by the University of Miami. The latest one that of having my recent book “Hurricane” well reviewed in the best papers and selling well in the best bookstores.
