First President of Hawaii, First Governor of the Territory of Hawaii
DOLE, Sanford Ballard (1844-1926). A leader of the revolutionary movement which ended the Hawaiian Monarchy in 1893. This resulted in Hawaii becoming a Territory of the United States of America. Dole became the first and only president of the Republic of Hawaii and first governor of the Territory. He born the title, “The Grand Old Man of Hawaii.” He became Justice of the Supreme Court in the new Government. Hawaii’s request for annexation to the United States was refused by President Cleveland. Cleveland wanted restoration of the Queen but Dole denied the right for Cleveland to interfere. After the constitution convention of 1894, the Republic of Hawaii was created. Dole was the first President. The islands were annexed in 1898. Dole was appointed by President McKinley as the first Governor of the Territory of Hawaii. Partly printed bank check signed, 8vo, The Bank of Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii, June 9, 1922, accomplished in Dole’s hand and made out for $133.42. Boldly signed by Sanford Dole.
