DIX, Dorothea Lynde (1802-1887) American nurse, reformer, and humanitarian. She served as superintendent of women nurses in the Union Army during the Civil War. She travelled nationwide visiting prisons and state institutions, writing reports on the treatment of the insane for state legislators. When she began her work in 1840, there were only eight insane asylums in the U.S. Almost without exception the asylums treated inmates with extreme cruelty. Travelling in Europe during the 1850’s she captured the attention of Queen Victoria. Between 1975 and 1998, only eight Dix letters were put up for sale in auctions. Offered is her personal copy of Practical Strategy as Illustrated by The Achievements of the Austrian Field Marshall Traun. Catskill, 1863. Signed “D.L. Dix” at the top right of the front cover and once again on the title page, Light feathering to the signature on the front cover.
