Russia’s Top WW1 Naval Ace
DeSEVERSKY, Alexander P. (1894-1974) Russian American aviation pioneer. He graduated from the Imperial Russian Naval Academy. He studied at the Russian Military School of Aeronautics in 1915. In 1921 he filed a patent for aerial refueling. He developed the P-35 fighter plane. On his first combat mission he lost his right leg. A year later he was back on the front with a wooden leg and a certification of qualification signed by the Czar. He flew 57 sorties and is credited with downing 18 German planes to become Russia’s top WWI Naval Ace. He received every decoration from Russia. As an assistant to Billy Mitchell, he perfected a 100% bomb sight. The U.S. Government bought 264 patent rights from him for $50,000. Using this money he started the DeSeversky Aircraft Co. in 1922. His best-selling book Victory Through Air Power was produced into a movie by Walt Disney. He received the Medal of Merit from President Harry Tuman.
