Her best-known role was as “Melanie Hamilton” in Gone With the Wind (1939). She received 5 Oscar nominations She dated Howard Hughes who gave the actress her first flying lesson. She also had a relationship with Jimmy Stewart. She became interested in politics and campaigned for FDR’s re-election in 1944.
