de HAVILLAND, Olivia (1916 Tokyo- 2020 Paris). French-British-American actress. She was popular from 1935 to 1988. She appeared in 49 featured films and was one of the leading actresses of her time. Her best-known role was as “Melanie Hamilton” in Gone With the Wind (1939). She received 5 Oscar nominations She dated Howard Hughes who gave the actress her first flying lesson. She also had a relationship with Jimmy Stewart. She became interested in politics and campaigned for FDR’s re-election in 1944. Olivia de Havilland and her sister Joan Fontaine are the only siblings to have won an Academy Award in a lead acting category. Typed letter signed, one page, Los Gatos, Calif. February 4, 1977.
