DE GAULLE, Charles (1890-1970). Chief of the Free French Forces during WWII. Interim President of France (1945-46). First president of the Fifth French Republic (1959-69). DeGaulle fought in WWI and was wounded and left for dead at Verdun. He revived in a cart on the way to the cemetery. DeGaulle escaped his captors and was recaptured five times during the war. Typed letter signed on his name imprinted stationery, 29 April 1954. DeGaulle is responding to a letter from an editor who is requesting to be the publisher of DeGaulle’s memoirs. DeGaulle responds that because of the historic nature of my war memories, I cannot consider the project of your kind firm. He adds that he has given it full consideration and was highly touched by the interest that has been given to his work. A wonderful one page example, typed in French, will full translation. A copy of the original letter to DeGaulle is also included. After giving the request much thought, it took DeGaulle almost a year to respond.........SOLD
