William R. Day Letter to the President of the United States
Day, William R. 91849-1923). Secretary of State (1898), Chairman U.S. Commission to arrange peace with Spain (1898-99) and Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1903-1922). Autograph letter signed, 2 full pages, Ashville, N.C., April 17, 1899. To: “The President, Executive Mansion, Washington, DC.” (William McKinley). Interesting content as Day brings to the attention of the President, Henry A. Spaulding of New York who was connected with the Office of Commissioner General of the Paris Expedition for which he received many endorsements from Senators. “I have examined with some care the places prepared under Mr. Spaulding’s direction for a museum of History & Court of Nation….the project is certainly one of great magnitude and importance.” Day goes on to ask the President for his endorsement in order to obtain foreign aid for this project. Spaulding (1839-1905) was a friend of Bartholdi and one of the best known retail jewelers in the USA and Europe.
