Inventor of the Davis Gun & Torpedo
DAVIS, Cleland. WWI Commander. He became a Naval Cadet on May 22, 1896 and was commissioned Ensign on July 1, 1892. He was promoted to lieutenant on March 3, 1899. During 1906, he became head of the radio division. In 1912, Davis invented the non-recoil gun and also invented the torpedo which made all navy’s arm the bottoms of all of their ships. The Davis Gun was used during WW I by the Americans and the British against submarines. They were at times attached to planes. The gun worked on the principal that the recoil from the projectile leaving the barrel of the gun could be cancelled out by the recoil of a counterweight (grease & shot) leaving the back of the gun. The lack of recoil meant there was no large shock to the aircraft when the gun was fired. Davis was promoted to Commander in 1915. Document signed, September 27, 1907, bank check on Riggs National Bank of Washington, DC made payable to E.W. Young for ten dollars and signed by Cleland Davis.. Cancellation holes do not touch Davis’s fine signature. Signatures of Davis are uncommon..........................$47.50
