His Holiness The Dali Lama XIV
DALI LAMA XIV (1935- ) (Tenzin Gyatso). Tibetan religious leader. In 1939 he was recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama in a public declaration. During the 1959 Tibetan uprising he fled to India where he currently lives as a refugee. He is the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (1989). In 1996 the Chinese Communist Party reinstated the total prohibition of any photograph of the 14th Dalai Lama. Authorities in Tibet have banned photographs in public places and monasteries. Plain clothes policemen went to hotels and restaurants and ordered all pictures of the Dalai Lama to be removed. Fabulous color photograph of the Dalai Lama, smiling, three quarters pose, sitting in a chair. Measures appx. 2.5”x4”. He has signed his name adding a sentiment and date. According to the verso it appears this photo was signed in 1988. Rather exceptional with the extra writing and date in his hand. In excellent condition..........................SOLD
