CROSSFIELD, Scott (1921-2006). American Naval Officer and test pilot. During 1953 he became the 1st test pilot to fly 1290 miles per hour, twice the speed of sound. He was the 1st of 12 pilots to fly the X-15. Known as the fastest man alive. He was killed in a plane crash. Autograph letter signed responding to a collectors request. He writes: “There is much to do. There is no divine assignment for people who do things. The opportunity is there for all and probably within the grasp of most.
