CROOKES, Sir William (1832-1919) Physicist, chemist and inventor. Discovered thalium (1861). During 1875 he invented the radiometer. His Crookes tubes were superior to the tubes with a cathode and anode. With his tubes he discovered the basic properties of the electric charge or cathode ray. Nominated for the 1906 Nobel Prize. Autograph letter signed ‘William Crookes’ ,7, Kensington Park Gardens, London W, July 10, 1903, to Lord Avebury. Crookes writes in part: “With much pleasure Lady Crookes and I accept Lady Avebury’s and your kind invitation to visit you at High Elens...".......................$195.00
