RARE Combination of Two Signatures
CORCORAN, W.W. (1798-1888). American financier and banker. In 1836 he opened a note brokerage house, an early form of a bank. During 1837, businessmen including Elisha Riggs shielded the Corcoran Brokerage House from collapse during the economic panic. In 1840, Corcoran and G.W. Riggs (Elisha’s son) formed Corcoran & Riggs, a partnership that offers depository and checking services. During 1842, John Tyler becomes the first president to bank at Corcoran Bank. In 1842, this firm establishes itself at the old United States Bank in Washington. During 1845, Corcoran & Riggs financed Samuel Morse’s invention of the telegraph. Twenty-two presidents and family’s including Abraham Lincoln banked at Riggs. A slip removed from a book containing signatures of prominent person’s who lived in Washington, D.C. Each has donated $100.00 to an enterprise. Two of the signatures are of Elisha Riggs, Jr. and W.W. Corcoran. Most likely unique, the first time we have seen both these signatures on the same item.
