Stephen Foster’s Lover
COOPER, George (1840-1927). American poet remembered chiefly for his song lyrics, many set to music by Stephen Foster. Cooper and Foster formed a team and wrote 21 songs together. The had a gay relationship. Cooper is best known for writing “Beautiful Dreamer”, Oh Susanna” and “Sweet Genevieve.” John Wayne sang “Sweet Genevieve” in the movie Fort Apache. Autograph letter signed, one page, 547 Broadway, N.Y. August 20, (18)74. To the Editor of The Aldine. Coper writes: “I send the enclosed little poem, which I hope will be acceptable, and for which I should be pleased to receive your usual terms. Truly yours, George Cooper.” Some mounting traces on the verso otherwise in very good + condition. Anything signed by George Cooper can be considered quite scarce............$185.00
