COHEN, Jacob Da Silva Solis (1838-1927). Jewish American physician. Expert in the use of the laryngoscope. During the Civil war he served as Assistant Surgeon in the 26th Pennsylvania infantry (1861). Acting Assistant Surgeon to the United States Navy (1861-64). He was the Visiting Surgeon to the Army Hospitals in Philadelphia until the war’s end. In 1867, Dr. Cohen became the first American to perform a successful laryngotomy for removal of a cancerous growth. In 1882, Cohen helped to establish the Philadelphia Polyclinic and College for Graduates in Medicine. Cohen published several works on diseases of the throat.
