Chief Justice U.S. Supreme Court (Lincoln), Secretary of the Treasury
CHASE, Salmon P. (1808-1873). Elected to the Senate in 1849 on the Free Soil ticket and led the formation of the Republican party. He was a vehement opponent of slavery. He was elected governor of Ohio in 1855 as a Republican and became Lincoln’s Secretary of the Treasury in 1861. Lincoln appointed him Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court in 1864 where he served as Chief Justice until 1873.
