- Jimmy Carter (b. 1924). 39th President of the United States (1977-1981),
and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. Prior to becoming
president, Carter served two terms in the Georgia Senate, and
was the 76th Governor of Georgia from 1971-1975. He and Senator
Ted Kennedy were the unofficial leaders of the Democratic Party,
excluding unelected presidential nominees, until the nomination
and presidency of Bill Clinton (1993-2001). Carter remains an
important and relevant national figure today, and he is a leader
on many issues, especially the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
his Carter International Center and work on behalf of the poor
and homeless .
