I Have Not Worked, If I Didn’t Win This Time It Shall Not Be Said I Did Not
Deserve To Win, You Must help me To The End, I Will Win & I Will See
That All My Friends Shall Win

CAMERON, Simon
(1799-1889).  Cameron was elected to replace James Buchanan in the U.S. Senate in 1844. Cameron was nominated for President but gave his support to Lincoln at the 1860 Republican National Convention. Secretary of War in Lincoln’s Cabinet. Involved in a scandal. Autograph letter signed, four very full pages, 3 Sept. 1853 to Wm. M. Gavin.  Cameron writes in part:  “I am sorry for the defeat of Hoye, I regretted his being a candidate.  If we had known......opposition I would to have tried to sooth him back. This all comes of friends not consulting each other.  If Hoye had told you of the RR you would have told me-I would at once have suggested him for the President. Really he is admirably first for it & the position of his brother would command it...in that situation he could elevate.....you could all be in a position to make fortunes.  I could not give my time to the place permanently but I am willing to go into it.....Plumon is unfit and the impression he has made at New York is not favorable....the stock he holds is mere moonshine....he never expects to pay for it.  Let W. Hoye....put the money of himself or his friends into it without a President of their own choice and he will drop from his favor of command to one of submission for he expects great advantages...I have not worked. If I don’t win this time it shall not be said I did not deserve to win. You must help me till the end. See Hoye before the election and get Shingort to give his mind to it. He does not know his own wonderful ability.  I will win and I will see that all my friends shall win.” Signed in full. Some show through as can be expected from the bold writing.  A few minor smears to some writing as can be expected otherwise a fine letter with great content................ $450.00
