Fugitive From A Chain Gang
BURNS, Robert E. (1892-1955). A World War 1 veteran he was convicted of armed robbery of a grocery store netting him $5.80. He was sentenced to 6-10 years of hard labor. He was imprisoned in Georgia. He escaped got caught and was imprisoned once again. Again he escaped and became a fugitive. His 1932 book “I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang” was published. It exposed the cruelty and injustice of the chain-gang system. A movie was made starring Paul Muni based on Burns’ book. Burns for years had an interesting exhibit of chain-gang life at the world famous Steel Pier in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Souvenir postcard depicting Robert Burns.
