BISSELL, Maj. General Clayton L. (1896-1973). American Ace in WW1. Served with the 148th Aero Squadron. Ace, confirmed with 5 victories. Commanded the 638th Fighter Sqdn in France. Awarded the D.S.C., D.S.M., Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross and many other medals from England, Italy, Chile and Ecuador. He was assistant to General Billy Mitchell (1921-24). He commanded the 10thArmy Air Force (1942-43). Asst. Chief of Staff, G-2 in charge of Intelligence, U.S. Army from 1944 until the end of the war. Buried in Arlington national cemetery. Lengthy autograph letter signed, on his name imprinted stationery. April 18, 1959. To Dear Neil and Grace (Goen). In part: “…your letter arrived this Saturday AM and the local customs office is not open….if I can move fast the three months to get delivery may not prevent getting what is desired in time….wrote Taylor re any info he may have on way to buy file cabinets at price 148th can afford..” Signed “Clayton”.
