Be Careful What You Write

UNITED STATES BISHOPS

Wells, Lemuel H.  (1841-1936).  First Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Spokane. He established 23 missions in the late 19th century in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Fought in the American Civil War during the Battle of Vicksburg. In 1900, he was seated with Queen Victoria during a dinner and told stories of his association with U. S. Grant and President Lincoln. On a card Bishop Wells writes: “As I am especially fond of boys your age Lawrence, I sign myself Truly Yours Lemuel H. Wells Bishop of Spokane Oct.23, 1903.”
TUTTLE, Dan’l S.  (1837-1923). Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Bishop of the Rockies. Fine signature adding “Bishop of Missouri” on a preprinted slip All American Conference of Bishops Pro-Cathedral Church of the Ascension Washington, D.C.
Atwill, Edward R.  (1840-1911). First Bishop of what is now the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri originally Kansas City.  Choice signature on the same slip described above,  the Bishop  adds “Bishop of West Missouri.” The two items
