BIALIK, Hayyim Nahman (1873-1934). Ukrainian born Jewish poet. Considered the leading poet in Hebrew of modern times. Essayist, story writer who exercised a profound influence on modern Jewish culture. His poem “The City of Slaughter” written after the Kishinev pogrom (1903) roused the younger generation to take up arms in self-defense. He assumed a leading role in Jewish cultural life and became the symbol of the National Revival. His home in Tel-Aviv has been preserved as a cultural center. The Bialik Prize for best in Hebrew Literature is a symbolic monument to his memory. Typed receipt in Hebrew with two place filled in with his pen.
