BERG, Henry (1811-1888). Founder of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) (1866) and served as its first president. He was instrumental in founding the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (1875). Scarce autograph letter, two very full pages, signed in full, no date, to a Mr. Gould. In part: “Faithful to our program….Florence the city of sweet songs and bad smells, little virtue and any quantity of carved gilt frames and the latter quality brings me at once to the point…..Your good picture of a bad subject….may be consigned when finished and boxed to the care of…..at Leghorn via Borra #7 who are authorized to receive and forward the same to New York. The said house, or rather Mr. Smythe, has one other case belonging to me which awaits the traveling companion you are about sending it, in order to set out upon its journey to the “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave”. Signed in full. In V/G condition. Handwritten letters of Berg are quite scarce...........$375.00
