BELL, Bert (1895-1959). NFL Commissioner (1946-1959). Married to Frances Upton. Co-founder of the Philadelphia Eagles. Inducted into the Pro-Football Hall of Fame (1963). Autograph letter signed, in pencil. Very lengthy 12-page letter on the letterhead of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Philadelphia. No date but with original envelope postmarked March 18, 1934. To “My Dearest Darling Wife.” Talks about: “...get my slippers out from under the bed and start spanking as I don’t understand how my darling girl...” “...all matters concerning money and I want you to go first because what the hell is money for....” “ ....and if I had to borrow it which I do not....” “...as this is the only thing I want to be boss in, I must have my own way, now darling do this for me....” “...with happiness and a little tear came trickling down my cheek as I think of what a terribly tough time you have had and how brave you have been about it all, my God my darling....” “...I love you and long for the time when we will be together for all the rest of our life, oh boy will I be happy and will I just love you to death...” “....I look up from my bed at your lovely pictures and just grab the pillow and pretend it is you and just hug and kiss and caress it and then talk to it....” “...I have plenty of money and I want you to go terribly please do it for me...” “...I as boss of the Bell family command my darling wife to go and if she loves me she will do things...” “...as it has cost too much in the hospital that she can’t afford to go.
