Creator of Smiley
BALL, Harvey (1921-2001). American commercial artist. Creator and designer of “Smiley” in 1963. It became an enduring and notable international icon. Ball worked for the State Mutual Life Assurance Corp. where the employees had a low morale. He created Smiley and 100 pins were made for the employees. It became quite a hit and by 1971, 50 million Smiley buttons were sold. The phrase “Have a Happy Day” became associated with Smiley. World Smile Corporation was founded by Ball in 1999. He has also written: “Creator of” and has drawn an original Smiley Face. On the verso is a limited-edition stamp #6 of 25 copies, hand signed by the two creators of this signed cover.
