A Founder of the A.C.L.U.
BALDWIN, Roger (1884-August 26, 1981). Lifelong pacifist, a founder of the American Civil Liberties Union (1920) and became its first Executive Director. A.C.L.U. under his leadership undertook some of its famous cases such as the Scopes Trial, Sacco & Vanzetti murder trial and his challenge to ban James Joyce’s Ulysses. Spent a year in jail as a conscientious objector. President Jimmy Carter awarded Baldwin the Medal of Freedom in January 1981. Fine Franklin D. Roosevelt cover with a printed cachet of FDR postmarked April 12 1977. Signed “Roger Baldwin, 2/20/81” just six months before his passing. Not common..............................$35.00
