ANDERSON, Marion 1908-1993). American Negro contralto. Her voice for years was muted because of the color of her skin. She met a milestone in civil rights history in 1939 when she performed on the steps of the Lincoln memorial after being denied concert rights in Constitution Hall. She became the first black to sing with the Metropolitan Opera in 1955 when her voice was passed its peak. She sang the Star Spangled Banner at the Inauguration of JFK.
