“1909” An Important Year in Exploration

AMUNDSEN, Roald
(1872-1928). Norwegian Polar Explorer; discovered the South Pole in 1911. Flew over the North Pole. Disappeared on a flight to rescue Nobile who was returning from the North Pole. Recent discoveries state that it appears that Amundsen not only was the first to reach the South Pole but also the first to reach the North Pole with Nobile and Ellsworth. Amundsen project was known as the “Fran Expedition” (1909-1912) whose aim was to reach the South Pole. Postcard, postmarked New York, December 1909, filled out in Amundsen’s hand to a Mrs. Alice Gade in Illinois. The explorer writes: “9 Dec. 1909, Au revoir Roald Amundsen”. Very unusual. Mounted to black paper otherwise a fine example................ SOLD
