AL-QUWATLI, Shukri (1891-1967). First President of Post Independence Syria (1943-1949). He was a statesman who led the anti-colonist movement in Syria. He was overthrown by a military coup in 1949 and imprisoned. In the 1955 free elections he was re-elected. Choice Syrian postage stamp signed by S. Al-Quwatli.
