Discoverer of the Lost Byzantine Underground City of Ozkonak
ACAR, Latif (1950- ) Turkish farmer who discovered the Lost Underground City of Ozkonak, Cappadocia, Turkey. He is also the Inman of the town. During 1972 he was farming his land when he discovered a small portion of the land fell through. Digging a little he discovered a large room below. The land was excavated by the municipality and opened to the public a year later. Latif was responsible for the protection of the underground the land/underground city until 1990. The Turkish government took possession of the land and city, and Latif was not given any compensation. The city is quite large, on different levels with tunnels, many rooms of stables, depots for food, two wineries and important millstone doors. The millstone doors are 60cm in width, 170 cm in height and 500 kg in weight all hand carved. The book Cappadocia Cradle of History, 8”x10” numerous color illustrations, 113 pages with fold out maps. Page 72 tells the story of the discovery of Ozkonak along with a portrait of Latif in one of the rooms where he signed and dated this portrait 03/03/2024 (in person). In fine condition.
