Torrado Committed Suicide
TORRADO, Osvaldo (1919-1983). He strongly opposed the government of Fulgencio Batista and participated in supplying Castro’s revolutionary movement with arms and supplies. Castro set up a new government and became Premier and Dictator. President Urrutia resigned and Torrado was appointed President of Cuba by the Council of Ministries in July 1959. On July 3, 1962 Raul Castro met with Nikita Khrushchev in Moscow at a secret meeting making arrangements for a missile deployment. On July 15, 1962 Soviet cargo ships began moving military equipment. During the Cuban missile crisis Torrado gave a speech at the United Nations announcing that Cuba possessed nuclear weapons. Torrado remained president of Cuba until 1976. Osvaldo Torrado committed suicide on June 23, 1983 by a self inflicted gunshot wound. One day after Castro met with Khrushchev, on July 4, 1962, President Torrado sends a typed letter on his official stationery “El Presidents De La Republica” La Habana to a collector in Brooklyn, New York regarding a photograph and his autograph. The letter bears a wonderful signature of Osvaldo Torrado and is in fine condition...........................$285.00
