Great Israeli Artist
SZYK, Arthur (1894-Sept. 13, 1951) Polish-American miniaturist and cartoonist and illustrator. As a child of six years old he started drawing. During WWI he was a highly decorated soldier who fought with the Russian Army before escaping. He is best remembered for his miniature book illustrations and illustrating many Israeli postage stamps. Some of his original works include “George Washington and His Times” (19310 which hung in The White House under the FDR administration. Another is his “Visual History of Israel” commemorating the Birth of the New Nation. (1948). Very colorful Israeli cover, First Day of Issue of the 5 and 15 cent Israeli stamps designed by Szyk. Postmarked Jerusalem 31.8.1950. Not common as Szyk signed this cover just a year before his early death. Fine condition...........................$65.00
