RYAN, T. Claude (1898-1982). Aviator, aircraft designer and builder. Founder of several airlines including Ryan Flying Co. Ryan purchased Donald Douglas’s first complete aircraft the Douglas Cloudster. Ryan and a partner founded The San Diego-Los Angeles Airlines. Then he formed Ryan Airlines. Later Ryan founded T.C. Ryan Flying School and the Ryan School of Aeronautics. The Ryan Aeronautical Co. was known as Ryan Aviation. In 1934, the Ryan ST was said to be one of the most beautiful aircraft ever built. Charles A. Lindbergh’s “Spirit of St. Louis” was formally a custom built Ryan NYP.” T. Claude Ryan was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame. First Day Cover commemorating the 50th Anniversary Solo Transatlantic Flight. The U.S. 13 cent Spirit of St. Louis is affixed and cancelled First Day of Issue. Roosevelt Field, N.Y. May 20, 1977. A fine cachet left side of cover depicts a portrait of Lindbergh along with The Spirit of St. Louis flying near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Hand signed: T. Claude Ryan.” In very good condition.
