ROBERTS, William Paul (1841-1910). Roberts enlisted in the 19th North Carolina Volunteers and was rapidly promoted. In February 1865 he became the youngest Confederate General Officer and commanded a brigade in W.H.F. Lee’s division. A story says that Robert E. Lee presented his own gauntlets to Roberts when he was commissioned brigadier. After the war, he served in the state legislature and as state auditor.
