POWELL JR., Lewis F. (1907-1998). American Jurist. Appointed by President Nixon to the Supreme Court. He served from 1971 to 1987. He voted in favor of the cases United States v. Nixon and Roe V. Wade. Typed letter signed, one page on the imprinted letterhead of the Supreme Court of the United States, Chambers of Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Dated December 11, 1978 to Mr. and Mrs. Robert LeBaron. Fine friendly letter during the holidays. Powell says in part: “….We look forward to seeing you during the New year, and again say to both of you that your friendship has been one of the most pleasant aspects of our years in Washington…” Signed “Lewis.”
Robert LeBaron was the deputy Secretary of Defense for atomic energy from 1949 to 1954. He was responsible for developing atomic policy on all matters relating to the defense department. He had also been an Olympic Games Athlete. He was a member of the Olympic track team in 1912 and participated in the games held in Stockholm and held the world’s 1,000 yard run record with a time of two minutes and twelve seconds.
