Last Communist Premier of East Germany
MODROW, Dr. Hans (1928- ) The last Premier of East Germany. He paved the way to the first and only free elections in East Germany. Modrow defended the construction of the Berlin Wall as a necessary measure to prevent WWIII. He blamed West Germany for the East Germans killed by the communist regime at the Berlin Wall. He was convicted of electoral fraud and perjury in May 1993 by the Dresden District Court. Later he was convicted of abuse of office. Since the premiership was the highest state post in East Germany, Modrow became the de facto leader of the country. Typed letter signed, one page on his ornate letterhead.
