Cuba’s Fifth President
MACHADO y MORALES, Gerardo (1871-1939). Hero in the Cuban War of Independence. After leaving the Army as a brigadier General, he turned to farming and business but remained active in politics. He headed the Liberal Party in 1920. His election to the presidency in 1924 was welcomed by most Cubans, especially the middle class. They thought a sensible businessman would restore order to Cuba’s disrupted society. To counteract economic depression caused by a declining sugar prices, Machado instituted a massive program of public works but was accused of enriching himself at public expense. In 1927 he seized control of the Cuban political parties. He was re-elected in 1928 despite heated opposition from students and professional men. He began to rule even more dictatorially. Disorder became widespread and in 1933, U.S. Ambassador Sumner Wells under directions from president Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to mediate between mach ado and opposition forces but a general strike was called. The Army demanded Machado’s ouster and he was forced into exile (Aug.12) from which he never returned. Autograph note signed on the imprinted stationery of the Hotel Bermudian, Bermuda (trimmed). March 17th, 1936 (during his exile). “From General Gerardo Machado to Miss Ann hedge with my best wishes. Gerardo Machado.” Small tape stain easily covered when matted. A very good example...........................$285.00
