Wrote The Words and Music of the California State Song
GRO, Josephine American songwriter and composer. Of her works, her most popular song was for the State of California “Hail California” written in 1896. Very rare autograph letter signed, one page, San Francisco, California, Aug. 14, 1897. To William G. Pengelly, Columbus, Ohio. Gro writes in part: “The enclosed State Song is being used in schools throughout the State, so autographing it, thinking you might prefer one of the most popular of my compositions. I used the California Poppy on the title, though I do not think it is yet universally known as the State Flower....Josephine Gro”.
The California Poppy was selected as the State Flower by the California Floral Society in December 1890. The State Legislature did not make the selection official until 1903-04.
