DeSEVERSKY, Alexander P. (1894-1974) Russian American aviation pioneer. In 1921 he filed a patent for aerial refueling. He developed the P-35 fighter plane. On his first combat mission he lost his right leg. He flew 57 sorties and is credited with downing 18 German planes to become Russia’s top WWI Naval Ace.
