DeCESPEDES, Carlos Manuel (1871-1939). President of Cuba. Lived in Germany and Paris. In 1895 he returned to Cuba and from 1895 to 1898 he fought in the War of Independence. During this time he became a Lieutenant Colonel. In 1933, president Gerardo Machado left Cuba and Cespedes was offered the position of President. He took the office on August 12, 1933. On September 6, 1933 a revolution took place and Batista demanded Cespedes to resign. Desirable military statement during the Cuban Revolution where he fought in the War of Independence. Cespedes writes: “To Rita Portuondo- No Cuban lady will be valid for her sacrifice for liberty, C.M.
