Pope Pius XII
War-Dated, Very Good Content
Very ScarceTyped Letter Signed

Pope Pius XII (Latin: Pius PP. XII), born Eugenio Pacelli (March 2, 1876 - October 9, 1958). Reigned as the 260th pope, head of the Roman Catholic Church and sovereign of Vatican City, from March 2, 1939, until his death in 1958. In his first encyclical (Summi pontificatus, 1939) Pius made a general attack on totalitarianism. During World War II, however, he believed that the Vatican could best work to achieve peace by maintaining formal relations with all the belligerents. He was later much criticized for not speaking out against the Nazi persecution of the Jews and accused of not doing enough to protect them within Italy. His leadership of the Catholic Church during World War II remains the subject of continued historical controversy. After the war, Pius XII contributed to the rebuilding of Europe, and advocated peace and reconciliation, including lenient policies toward vanquished nations and the unification of Europe.

Scarce Typed Letter Signed, War-Dated, Very Good Content, two pages, quarto, on ornate imprinted stationary, "Nunziatura Apostolica, Baviera & Oggetto" Monaco, li Luglio 1918. As Cardinal Secretary of State, during World War I, Pacelli maintained the Vatican's registry of prisoners of war. Loosely translated to the most Reverend Eminence (Cardinal in Rome, Gasquet):

"I send with particular interest a letter to the Ministry of War in Berlin to find out what happened to Captain Paget. I hope that you can grant my indulgence I'm giving you additional notice that I'm telegraphing immediately Hi Eminence The Cardinal Secretary of State so he can begin communication with Your Eminence (the Pope). I'm looking for Capt. Gustavos and ask War Ministry for precise communications and additional information where this man is (prisoner of war) last located 23 March who was made a prisoner at Hammerstein. I am sure that Your Eminence is going to continue to speak strongly about this notice because it's shameful we can't locate this man. The pleasure of speaking to you on my part is ultimately mine and please place a kiss on the sacred ring with a sense of deep veneration."

The future pope writed four words in his hand, draws the Sign of the Cross, signs his name in full, adding: "Archbishop of Sardi, Our Apostle."

Some underlining where the content is important. Accompanied with a portrait of Pope Pius XII. Overall, in fine condition. $2,500.00
