- AUSTIN, Moses (1761-1821). American Merchant, Miner, The Founder of Texas.
Austin was the first American to obtain a grant from Spanish
Texas for the formation of a colony. The colonists, 300 Catholic
families from the Louisiana Territory settled on land that would
eventually become Austin, Texas. The grant was approved only
three months before his death. His son, Stephen F. Austin, took
up 'the Texas venture' and carried out the settlement.
Exceptionally Rare Autograph Letter
Signed, one page, approximately 8 in. by 8 in., from Mine
au Breton, Louisiana, District of St. Louis (present day Potosi,
Missouri), dated November 11, 1809. A
letter dealing with financial matter relating to his mine. Boldy
signed with a flourish, "Moses Austin."
Moses Austin material in any form is exceptionally scarce. Approximately
25-30 signed documents or letters by him are known to exist.
