Autograph Forger turned one of the Richest Men In America
YOUNG, Owen D. (1874-1962).Autograph forger, American Industrialist, diplomat known for the Young Plan to settle Germany’s WW1 reparations. Founder of RCA, Radio Corporation of America in 1919. He co-authored the Dawes Plan. In January 1930 he made the cover of Time Magazine as Man of the Year. In 1932 he was candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination. He became one of the riches men in America. He became Director of the Federal Reserve Bank in New York. He was one of the great rare book and manuscripts collectors in America. Collectors may best remember him for his early forgery of a Major John Andre letter to Geoge Washington asking Washington to shoot a soldier as a soldier rather than hanging him as a spy. Thiry years later he saw the same letter (which he did not recognize) in a London auction and purchased it for 3 times what he had originally sold it for. A book by Ida M. Tarbell Owen D. Young, A New Type of Industrial Leader. The MacMillan Co. 1932. First Edition. Three hundred fifty-three pages with illustrations. Inscribed and signed on the front free endpaper: “For Charles William Taussig (American writer, President of the American Molasses Company and Ass’t Sec. of the Interior) with best wishes Owen D. Young. In very good condition with silver lettering on spine and cover nice and bright. Apparently, Young was pleased with this book and gave some away as gifts...........................$150.00
