MEREDITH, James (1933- ). Pioneer of the Civil Rights Movement. Twice, he was denied entrance to the University of Mississippi. First African American student to enter the University of Mississippi, an event that was the flash point in the American Civil Rights movement, Governor of Mississippi tried to block his entrance. Case went to the Supreme Court. In Oct.1962, a deal was made between Attorney General RFK and the Governor of Mississippi to allow Meredith to become the first black student.
